Chasteen has done what many historians seek to do, but which many fail: John Charles Chasteen presents a compelling narrative of the Latin American experience, animated by stories about These items are shipped from and sold by different sellers. For an introductory text concerning such a huge region and time period, it did a remarkable job of pointing out that nothing happened everywhere, and showing just enough information about what was going on in places that didn’t follow the pattern and with everyday people and women that it firmly situated itself as an introductory text, which made me want to learn more.


Problems in Modern Latin American History: First, inclined for a four, then a two, so going for a three. Societies with few rich people with great power and privilege, many poor with seemingly little chance to improve their lives, and a small middle class are the rule in the region, while economic opportunity and real democracy have been rare.

Sometimes the book shoots off into tangents and hops around abruptly, but honestly that might be the by product of trying to synthesize nearly a millennia of history into a little over pages. Chasteen pretty clearly favors the left-of-center welfare states of the twentieth century as an important part of the solution to these problems.
